The Best Introduction to Wargaming is Here

Warlord Games has created a very well thought, purpose driven product in their new Bolt Action Starter Set. And while the set does include some nice minis, cool terrain items, and a few other gaming accessories, the thing that it brings to the table is the new Bolt Action Field Manual. The Field Manual is the quintessential go to for teaching someone who knows nothing about the hobby all about the hobby in a simple 64 page basic introduction. And the hidden charm of the manual is that the fundamentals it teaches and shows you on building figures, prepping them and painting them, and how to look at expanding armies, extends to any wargame from Bolt Action, to Warhammer, to HALO Flashpoint, and Blood and Plunder.

The Field Manual is broken into 7 sections. The first couple cover the Bolt Action name brand and what wargaming as a hobby really entails (Collecting, Assembling, Painting, Playing, etc), plus some general background on the Second World War as a frame of reference. Then the manual dives into model assembly (something us experienced gamers take for granted), how to properly cut, clean up, and prep your minis and how to glue them together. Then its on to the basics of the rules, game types, and gameplay concepts for Bolt Action. This is a very basic cut down and easy to grasp version of the V3 rules that allow someone new to get a feel for things without being overwhelmed by a massive hardback Rulebook. After that, there are 6 really great mock missions and scenarios designed to get some play time under your belt and to help you grasp the concept of how to build and outfit your miniatures for specific games. The first mission only requires 6 figures and has a great section on build suggestions for that mission to help new players see the concept in action. Finally, it finishes up nicely with those major next steps for new players: Painting the army you just built and where to go to expand it from here. The painting guides line up nicely with Army Painter and Vallejo painting products. And there are links to more free painting guides online. The final showcase guide can help players decide where to go after they complete their 6 included missions in the Manual.

From start to finish, the Field Manual can really take a brand new gamer and put them on the right path for success with Bolt Action, and many other tabletop games. Which is why its a fantastic way to get your friend or family member into the hobby and build your own player base right at home!
